
Remembering Mercedes Redman
Mercedes Redman was a cherished member of the INCA family. This brilliant young woman returned to the 2022 Summer Institute as a teaching assistant, building on several years of learning and practicing journalism. She spent time putting new students at ease, and then journeyed onward to the spirit world. We miss her deeply. Mercedes left behind an astounding journalistic legacy for one so young. She lives on in her work, some of which is shared on this page.
Producer and Host - Wicozani
Mercedes produced Wicozani, a podcast for the pîkiskwêwin.ca website. The podcast explores Dakota Traditions of Food Sovereignty through conversations with Dakota Elder Angela Redman. This series is for Dakota language learners with an interest in this traditional use of the land. It was released in 2022.

Investigative Journalist - Broken Promises
In 2019-2020, Mercedes joined a national investigation into drinking water issues in First Nations communities. She contributed research into the how contaminated drinking water is connected to colonialism and the ongoing struggle of Indigenous people to exercise their sovereignty over water resources. Her work received credit in broadcasts and articles by APTN News, the National Observer, Le Devoir, Global News and the Tyee.

Producer and Host – Youth Voices TodaY
Mercedes produced and hosted two seasons of Youth Voices Today in 2020 and 2021. The podcast captures how COVID-19 was affecting youth in care. It was created in partnership with the Ministry of Social Services and First Nations University of Canada.

Broadcast Journalist - CTV News
Mercedes soaked up knowledge of TV journalism working beside Nelson Bird, Creeson Agecoutay, Adam Gamble and others at CTV. This report, created during the FNUniv Spring Powow, describes Mercedes’ experience at CTV and features her interviewing youth at the powwow.
Online Journalist - RezX Magazine
Mercedes was still in high school when she started writing articles for RezX as part of a five-week internship. She made the most of her experience, producing nine stories and a photo essay during the month of May, 2017.
